Dear Daniel,
Thank you for your interest in collaborating with SAGE on your proposed project.
Currently, we are working with schools on Assembly Talks/Learning Journeys and Story-Telling Programme. The Learning Journey programme is targeted at Secondary Schools, particularly the Upper Secondary as the topic on ‘Ageing” is covered in the Social Studies and Human Geography syllabus. At the talks, we give students an overview of the demographic situation in Singapore and its implications. I am currently working with ITE Bishan on a workshop on ‘Communicating with Older Persons’. With Admiralty Secondary, we integrate the service learning component and students offer their services and make crafts for the senior citizens. With most secondary schools, the programme is a presentation on ‘Challenges of an Ageing Population’. As you can see, the talk or workshop format can be worked out and customized to the needs of the school. The main intention is to give students an insight on ageing issues and change their negative attitudes towards ageing or even encourage them to offer their services to the elderly. A sample programme for AssemblyTalk/Learning Journey is attached.
I understand that your project is for the period of Feb and March and that the proposed arrangements have not been confirmed with St. Andrews. Increasingly, schools are recognizing that CIP should preferably not be done on an ad-hoc basis. To benefit the students and the VWOs, more schools are looking into sustained partnerships where there is greater continuity and greater impact. Whatever the project, careful thought and planning are necessary in order that all the parties benefit. For a start, we could look at the following:
- facilitating at the talks and workshops
- organizing the programmes at the SACs
- inputs on new programmes
Of course if the programme outcome is good, we could look at working together to implement it with other schools.
Once again, thanks for your interest. Please feel free to call me should you need further clarification.
